About Indonesia West Sumatra Ming Solok Washed

This is a brand new washed coffee out of West Sumatra, making it’s first appearance in Australia this winter. This coffee comes from smallholder farmers in the village of Surian, Solok region, West Sumatra. The mill manager Edranovid is working very closely with our Sumatran partners at CV Yudi Putra to increase production and produce specialty grade coffee. At this stage there were only a few bags of specialty grade coffee that we were able to export, but by working very closely with our suppliers we’re hoping to increase this volume in the coming years.
The village of Surian is approximately 60 kms inland from the town of Padang, which is the capital of West Sumatra and the gateway to the famous Mentawai Islands. Smallholder farmers grow their coffee between 1250-1600 meters above sea level and harvest takes place between October to March every year.
This particular lot is a fully washed coffee, this is quite rare for Indonesia due to their unpredictable weather conditions. During harvesting only fully ripe cherry is picked and if underripe cherry ends up being picked it is removed by hand prior to further processing. The over-ripe cherry is separated in floatation tanks, so that only prime red cherry is sent to pulpers. Coffee is then pulped and the parchment is fermented for 36 hours in a dry fermentation. After the mucilage is removed, the clean and washed parchment is sent for drying. Coffee need to reach around 11% moisture level before it is ready to be hulled and bagged up for export.

About CV Yudi Putra

All our Sumatran coffees are directly sourced through a small family export company and our good friend “Dody Sayhrum” from CV Yudi Putra. CV Yudi Putra have an extensive network of small micro-mills in West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh.
These guys are really breaking the mold of the old style Mandheling and Lintong. They have watched and reacted to the demands of the specialty coffee world and are working hard on quality systems- strict buying processes, separating lots, new processing styles and micro-milling. They are fortunate to own their own farm near Jumeroba in Lake Toba, which allows them to test and trial new ideas like honey processing, raised bed cherry drying and even traditional washed and fermented coffees.
Dody and his family really are leading the charge for specialty coffee production in Sumatra and MTC Group are proud to be working directly with them on improving qualities from this amazing region of the coffee world.
